Surviving the Winter

For surviving the winter you have to chop a trillion pieces of wood . But me and my cousin Zoie and my brother Bodee we did it the medium  way. The medium way is laying it on a tree stump and then we jump on it to break the wood if the wood is hard.  And if it is easy we only have to stomp on it. My dad uses a chainsaw and we have a wood splitter.  I am the one that gets to make the wood splitter work.  It can be a boring job sometimes so I take lots of breaks.  In our house we only use wood to keep warm in our wood stove.  We don’t even use our electricity because it gets so expensive.  It was hard work to get all of that wood but it will be really cold soon so I am glad we are done with that!

In the  barn our dog’s are like pup-sicles so we try to keep them warm. And every time we come to feed them my mom and dad have to get a ski pole and stab there water because there water is like an icicle. Some time’s we have  to dump out there water and give them new water. We once got heat lamps for the dog’s and they worked.  Ikaika likes to lay next to the heat lamps because it is super warm.  He likes the heat lamps over his warm dog house.  My dads dog Jed doesn’t like to be in his dog house either.  He lays on top of it next to the heat lamp.  I don’t think he will ever be cold since he is always running back and forth and back and forth.

We have two horses one girl is a Buckskin Paint the other girl is a Dapple Gray . The Buckskin Paint is named Shawnee and the Dapple Gray is named Bly. We built stalls and one time I was jumping on the trampolean with Braydee and Lanston and the wind picked up our stalls and made it crash onto our upper nebers fence.  We screamed so loud we could of probably broke glass since we screamed so loud.  We have to build them a new place to get out of the snow and rain since the stalls were recked.  Dad says that if they have a place to get out of the wether they will be warm this winter.

We have a cat her name is Katyana. For some reason when I am about to come in  she is always  at the door. Once my mom was grocery shopping and she came in with a perfect box that was a perfect  cat house. We colored it after it was done it looked crazy. Then we put it in the garage. And once when I went in to check on her she was in the little box I made for her.  When she runs up to me I pick her up and feel her body.  It is toasty warm but her ears are always cold.

You Don’t Pick Horses, They Pick You

I have gotten to ride a lot of horses and they were all pretty and some of them were handsom.  I got to ride a very fast horse that dous barrels and poles.  Her name is Hot Rod and she even walks fast.  My friend Tricia says she is a “hot horse” and hard to handle.  When she gallops I am in mid-air.  I did not like to ride her for that long. Tricia put me on a different horse to ride instead named Blackie.

Hot Rod

Blackie is a good horse but when you whip her too much she will buck.  I have learned that the easy way becus I saw someone ELSE get bucked off of her.  I rode her and I did not whip her so I did not get bucked off.  I rode her and I did a walk and a trot on her.

Rain is a good horse.  She is a Palamino and my friend Kallie uses her for goat tying.  She is awesome, sometimes slow, but still awesome.  She galloped with me once but usually she just walks.  Rain will let anyone ride her becus she is really sweet.

I also rode other horses named Essence, Little Man and Cree.  They are really nice and easy to ride but none of them are like my favorite horse, Shawnee becus she loves me and listens to me the best.

My mom pict Shawnee but she pict me!  She pict me becus I love her!  Evory time we visit her I always give her grass and pet her all over.  She was not even broken before my dad started braking her in June.  She is 4 years old and has never been ridden before my dad broke her.  This is a picture of the first time I ever rode her.  It was only 6 weeks after we started working her.  The first time I rode her my boots fell off and I rode with my socks.  She stepped on my boots but lucley I got new ones from Boot City.  That saddle was to big it was my dads.

I love to brush Shawnee and my dad is teching me how to saddle up a horse.  Shawnee lets me do anything with her.  When she got her horseshoes she was good most of the time.  My mom let me give her love while she was getting her horseshoes so she woodnt go crazy.  She calmed down when I was with her and didn’t go crazy.

Shawnee is still my moms horse but she loves me a little bit more.  I hope that I can do barrels, goat tying and poles with her whenever I am able to ride her by myself at a lope.  Whenever I cluck to her she would trot and when I kiss to her she lopes.  And when I say whoa she stops emedietly.  Once when I said whoa I about went over the saddle horn becus she was loping and stopped so fast.

Dakota Ride

Now we have her at our house and I have only rode her once and my dad walked her so she can get used to her new home.  I can look outside and see our horses eating or running or playing or licking their salt lick.  It is a pretty view.  I am glad I get to see her every day becus I only saw her Saturdays or Fridays.  I can pet her whenever I want.  I can play with her whenever I want.  I just have to be careful of the shocking wire becus my dad says it will hurt BAD.  He already got shocked by it so he would know.  I made up this song just thinking of my horses.  “I looked out the window and what did I see?  Two little horses staring at me!”

Bly is our other horse.  I don’t ride her because she is my dad’s horse and she did not pick me!  My Aunt Karen says that next summer I can get my own baby colt. And I made a poem about the baby horse too.  “Boy or girl, I don’t care, I like horses everywhere.”

Then my mom can have her horse back.  MAYBE!

Some of the best cowboys are COWGIRLS!

DakotaI am seven years old and I live in Wyoming.  I have a 4 year old brother named Bodee and he calls it Wy-home-ing.  My dad wus a professional bull rider when he was dating my mom  so he loves that I like to rodeo.  My mom cooks osom meals for me and my brother and my dad and she helps me practice tying my goat.

What do I do every day?  In the summer I have chors that I have to do each day.  My summer chors are easy but some days it is hard to do them becous I just want to play outside.  My neber comes over to play but sometimes I am besey doing things my mom and dad tell me to do.  I have to make my bed first and I like doing that 0% of the time.  We have 8 dogs and I have to take care of 3 of them that live in our house.  Their names are Kai, Katya and Nancy aka Keahi (my mom and dad call her that but her real name is Nancy since I named her that).  I will rite more about our other dogs in a different blog post.  We have a K9 training business so there is a lot more to tell about them.

Me and Kai

After I get dressed I have to brush Kai, Katya and Nancy and then pik up their dog poop in the yard.  My mom and dad pay me for this chor so it makes it esier to do.  3 dogs poop a million times in one day!  Tundra is the next animal I have to take care of.  She is a feisty goat but mom and dad say she has to eat every day lol.  I also have to make sure she has water to drink.  Do you know how much water a goat drinks in one day?  ALOT!  Tundra really helps me to be better at goat tying.  My mom says if I can tie Tundra I can tie any goat.

On the weekends I have different chors to do when we go down to train our horses.  We have two horses.  One is Bly my dads horse and the other is Shawnee.  My mom thinks this is her horse but she is wrong it is my horse.  I help my dad catch Shawnee in the pasture and then he works her in the big barn.   She was unbroken when he started in May but I have already been able to ride her.  When he has her in the round pen I have to pick up her poop when she goes so it does not stink in there.  I also get to help brush Shawnee and she really loves me.  When my dad works his horse Bly, I help clean out her stall with my mom and cousin Zoie.  Cleaning up that poop is way harder than cleaning up dog poop in my backyard.  After I am done with those chors all that I have to do is run around chasing chickens and playing on the horse swing that my aunt and uncle have on their horse walker.

I love my summers here in Wy-home-ing and I am not looking forward to it being over!  In Wyoming our summers do not last that long.  The only good thing about the winter is that I do not have as many chors to do since it is so cold.  Did you know it got down to -28 this past winter?  Now you know why I like summer better even if I have to do chors!
